1st Graders have been studying warm and cool colors with 2 separate projects.  We created a fall landscape using painting and torn paper collage. We talked about how artists make things look near and far in their pictures.  Artists use several tricks that your young artist should be able to name!  1. Things near us are usually larger than things far away.  2.  Things near us are usually down farther on the page. Things farther away are usually up higher.  3.  Things near us usually have more detail than things far away.  4.  Overlapping shows which object is closer and which is farther away.

We also have been working on papier-mâché masks.  Some classes have started painting, and others will be painting them this week.  Students will choose a mood for their mask, and then decide whether they want to use warm or cool colors to paint their mask.  We discuss emotions and color-  and also admit that there is no absolute right or wrong way to do this.  Though experts have their opinions about what colors correlate to specific emotions- it isn’t always cut and dry.
