Hi New Families 🙂  I wanted to give you a little tour of the art room so that you have an idea of what your kiddos do when they come to art.  Kids come to art once a week with their class for 55 minutes.  They start out sitting on the carpet for directions.  We usually look at some fine art examples or talk about what we’re going to do for the day.

We have 5 rules in art class. We went over these the very first day of class. They hang in the front to help us remember.

After directions students go to their table.  Everyone has an assigned seat at a table. They sit in the same place each week. Be sure to ask your student where he/she sits.  (sorry about the mess in the picture….the art room is an ever-evolving mess!)

We get supplies and get to work.  Towards the end of the hour, I stop the class and give clean up directions and it is sadly time to go.  🙁 I wish everyone could just stay until they were done with their projects- but alas! Many times we have to wait until the following week to finish up.  If we do something really messy we have to stop early and wash our hands across the hall in the bathroom. Most of the time we just have messy fingers so we use baby wipes to clean up.  The kids get a big kick out of that! I hear a lot of either “these smell good” or those who have younger siblings usually say “eeeeewwwww these are used on babies!”

We also wear paint shirts which fit more like dresses on the kindergarteners. We have been painting now for a few weeks, so hopefully they haven’t been coming home covered in paint. I think we’ve been doing a pretty good job containing the mess, but I’m sure a few slip by!

During the year we do drawing, painting, clay sculpture, collage and printmaking projects.  I try to plan a wide variety of projects in order to give students experience with different media and tools. If you’d ever like to join us for kindergarten art, you are more than welcome!  Feel free to just stop by, come with your student to class- or arrange a time by sending me an email first. You are always welcome.
