3rd Graders have been studying Georgia O’Keefe.  We read a book about Georgia O’keefe and then did some planning sketches.  First students created drawings of flowers from memory.  Then, they did some observational drawings of flowers.  We found out that observational drawings (where you look carefully and draw slowly) include many more details.  After doing some sketching, students chose one flower to enlarge for a painting.  Students drew the flower so that it touched all four sides of their paper. Then they traced with sharpie, added some colored marker and painted with water.  After everything was dry, students used watercolors to add a background.  The results are impressive!  This lesson is adapted from a lesson I found here on an art education professional development site I really enjoy reading.
